Mandai Rainforest Resort

Designer: WOW Architects / Warner Wong Design

Location: Mandai Wildlife Reserve, Singapore

Award: Triple Winners of AHEAD Asia 2025: Resort, Sustainability & Lodges

Design Inspiration

As Singapore’s first genuine regenerative resort, the Mandai project prioritizes reverence for nature in its core design philosophy. Instead of bulky constructions intruding into wilderness, the buildings seem to naturally grow out of dense tropical rainforest foliage. With ultra-light structural intervention, WOW Architects minimizes disruption to the original ecosystem while crafting a secluded retreat enabling guests to reconnect profoundly with nature.

Spatial Highlights

  1. Guest suites are suspended or tucked amid treetops like treehouses, blurring the physical divide between indoor and outdoor spaces entirely.
  2. Every guestroom features expansive open layouts opening 180° onto untouched primitive rainforest scenery.
  3. Extensive passive climate-control design maximizes natural ventilation and daylight penetration to cut carbon footprint.

Materials & Palette

Upholding locality and eco-friendly principles, the resort extensively adopts reclaimed timber, woven bamboo, rattan and rough-hewn natural stone. The entire color palette draws directly from surrounding rainforest: bark’s taupe brown, earth’s ochre and deep emerald green of foliage, making interiors an organic extension of the wild natural landscape.
