Fenix Museum of Migration

Designer: MAD Architects (Ma Yansong)

Location: Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Award: Dezeen Awards 2025; Architect of the Year 2025 (MAD Architects)

Category: Museum & Public Cultural Venue

Design Inspiration

MAD Architects transformed the historic former Fenix warehouse at Rotterdam Harbour into a metaphor-driven migration museum. The project commemorates millions of Europeans who crossed oceans to seek new lives and pays tribute to Rotterdam’s inclusive maritime spirit. Beyond conventional historic restoration, a futuristic tornado-shaped observation deck bursts forth from the solid industrial heritage structure, symbolizing migrants’ powerful determination to leave the unknown behind and embrace new beginnings.

Spatial Highlights

  1. A massive double-spiral stainless steel staircase dubbed “the Tornado” pierces through the roof, acting as a sculptural hub linking dim interior exhibition spaces to sweeping panoramic city views.
  2. Original concrete column grids and raw textures of the century-old warehouse are largely retained to preserve the weight of history.
  3. Fluid, open exhibition layouts echo the core themes of migration and perpetual movement.

Materials & Palette

The interior stages a striking contrast of contrasting materials: rough concrete, weathered red brick and rusted corten steel anchor the lower levels as emblems of history, while sleek curved silver stainless steel and expansive transparent glass cut through the space to represent the future. Sharp clashes unfold between cold and warm tones, old and new textures, massive solidity and ethereal lightness.
